Bitcoin itself should not be advertised, only bitcoin related services should, because if you are to advertise bitcoin it would just make it resemble some ponzi scheme.
With the financial freedom bitcoin offers, there's no need for promotion, if people want it , they will find it themselves. Anyways - who would profit from promoting it ?
On the other hand, services are something else, and are the way for bitcoin to get exposure and services get customers, so it's a win-win situation.
