I wonder also, is it vital to provide also the ground connection? All the powered riser I´ve seen are only using one wire (12V).

no , ground is not crucial. since its shorted to pcie 6-pin grounds, current can go back that way. so you won't burn pci-e slot , and there is a s**tload of grounds at 24pin atx, so you won't se that burnt either . but its safer and helps a little to have it anyway.
