Personally Im doubtful of that precisely for the reasons you state, if PayPal did that it will be like accepting defeat they will be saying to the world bitcoin beat us and now in order to survive we need to accept it and become part of our fierce adversary.

It may happen. There are plenty of examples of business that did not go with the flow and never innovated that resulted to their downfall. Look at Nokia, it was the biggest cellphone producer. Where are they now? This might happen to Paypal, we will never know for sure.
