Spaces are characters too , only quotes are excluded from the counting . From OP :

Thanks for clearing this us. I was counting my characters for purpose of raising my post quality. I was counting it without the white spaces. Good to know. Thanks MadGamer!

You don't increase your post quality by counting your characters. You just revealed yourself as a spammer and that's not good at all.

I think the dev should remove that post quality thing there. If it doesn't mean anything, it shouldn't be there.
