What's the difference between Russia taking over part of Ukraine and America trying to invade whole Midle East?

Russia is an aggressor and America is at war with it since 1947. Now America had a real opportunity to gain a foothold in Ukraine and weaken Russia. Obama was a coward and wouldn't do it, but Trump is a idiot. I feel sorry for you America.
