According to his last messages (public and private), he stopped improving the site because he started a complete rewrite of the software. But then he succumbed to the "version 2 syndrome" (which I know quite well...), could not finish it, and apparently his heart was no longer in the project...

Unfortunate. Maybe one day he will either turn the project over to someone else or pick it back up and continue.
