How do I transfer small amounts, and is it typical to have transaction fees for transfers in BTC? I thought a point of BTC is to be able to transfer freely without fees, maybe I am mistaken.

I you have in your address 0.1 BTC which you received in one transaction, then you have to wait at least 10 days to be able to send it without transacion fees, in other words x bitcoin days.
