Quite the contrary. People wanted to know if God existed long ago. The fact that simple nature shows God, wasn't enough for them. So they developed science. Then science proved to them that God existed:

All this happened long ago. Yet, for some reason people wanted God to not exist. So they turned to making science theory that disproved God, and started believing science theory to be fact to attempt to do this. When they did this, they made science into a religion, the exact thing they were trying to remove from their lives.
Science has always proven that God exists. And nature has always shown it. Attempting to believe things contrary to science and nature only turns people into fodder for Hell.
