As an exchange , they clearly have a source of income otherwise they can't even run servers and pay developers , and trading fees are an example for that income.

I know that BUT lets say someone put 1 mill bitcoin on there. they couldn't pay the interest there from that could they... I mean do they invest the bitcoin? What do they do? I want to work out the risks.

Answer simple - we have limits for interest accounts. Thats it.
