It's not an optimization though. It's an exploit to gain advantage with no positive benefit to the network. It's not like designing a more power efficient chip or getting cheaper power because those things retain the way they mine blocks. Isnt optimization about efficiency and monetary advantage? If you had an ASIC manufacturing firm and you discovered a way to create chips which give your miner a monetary advantage would you not pursue it?

I'm not faulting them for doing it but now that it's discovered the advantage will be gone soon and it reveals the motivation for resisting segwit has more to do with loss of their advantage than making bitcoin strong. Optimising your own profits by gaming the code is fair play but it's not what I consider an optimisation to the function of mining or transactions. Since code can be changed, I suspect the advantage will not exist for much longer.
