First of all, we can not know what they are doing and what not. I can not agree with you that they are to blame for present state of the world because there is not enough evidence for that. While I will concede that there are organizations out there that have an overarching, sinister aim, I don't believe they are that effective. There are very few example of monolithic evil in real life. It tends to break down when you start examining the motivations of individual actors, rather than the whole .some of the intentions in the group will be at odds with others.

What more closely resembles the Illuminati is the political lobbying system. That is a perfect example of a monolithic interest, a freaking industry having political personhood and the ability to influence policy.
