Regardless of what people do or don't use the cards for I don't understand the signature check period. Why limit what people can use your cards for? I just don't see any upside to the signature check for AMD.

There's always that. People who shouldn't also mess with the voltages and blow capacitors. Obviously you'd need to buy a replacement card then too. Thinking along less cynical lines though I would just expect AMD to want the widest possible pool of people buying their cards. Plenty of people have gone the nvidia route for mining, despite the lower profitability, simply because it's basically plug and play. Rather than trying to lock people out they could build an afterburner-style tool that allows for memory timing controls. Have it initially disabled with the same "don't be an idiot" warning that comes with the voltage controls.
