How will the new system affect withdrawals that are already in progress, but not confirmed? I have one that has been sitting for 24 hours now with 0 confirmations.

It won't have any effect on the previous withdrawals. The blockchain is very slow for now, over 110K unconfirmed transactions : https://blockchain.info/fr/unconfirmed-transactions
