Based on the fees you're sending, you're using the Blockchain wallet. Their "fee estimation" is just calculating what the size of the transaction will be and then setting it to 120 satoshi per byte, about half of the recommended fee right now, so it'll never be totally practical.

blockchain is simple but slow

You could always use their "Advanced Send" feature and choose the fee yourself. Even if you set a fee just slightly over their recommended one, it might have quite a bit of difference considering how many transactions are sent with 120 satoshi/byte fees all the time.
