The Chinese authorities cracked down the protests using extreme force. Dozens of Muslims were sentenced to death and later executed, and after this incident, there were hardly any reports of Islamic extremism in the Xinjiang province. It was one of the reasons why thousands of conservative Uighurs migrated out of China. A few thousand ended up in the ISIS controlled part of Syria.
