When you mine Bitcoins, you are securing the network by confirming transaction. Quite a lot. Most successful mining enterprises end up purchasing electricity, land, and miners in bulk, thus taking advantage of an economy of scale. Of course, if you want to try your luck at solo-mining, and need a wireless router as well, you can get a router with Bitcoin miner built-in for around 40 USD.
