When the difficulty bomb hits, the block time will increase and the system will be unuseable eventually. But the roadmap forsees to go away from Proof of Work before that. Similar to ethereum.

The difficulty increase that we saw recently has not increased the block time, therefore the supply of new coins remains stable. It has simply made the reward for each individual miner smaller, because more miners came in.

Unfortunately, with the pull back of the price a lot of miners dropped off as of the last few days and rewards aren't seeming to line up so hopefully it corrects itself. Block times and coins produced will slow down heavily otherwise looks like.
