There is some kind of competition. More than one kind, but let's just focus on ring signatures vs DarkSend (now RingCT vs PrivateSend).

You dark loyalist's have a wierd saviour complex about your dev. He is alright, but he has nothing on the dev's of ring signature coins. They are hackers. They are genuine cryptographers. Evan Duffield is an everyday software designer who wanted to have a go at solving the anonymity problem.

That was three years ago. Now it's 2017 and Dash's PrivateSend is still expensive, slow and ineffectual compared to Monero's RingCT.

IIRC gmax calld it "harmful garbage." Cheesy
