Yes,as far as bitcoin is considered,holding it in a long term basis is the best way to make good profits since short term benefits could not be expected from it.Just holding bitcoins for even two months could give good returns.

But altcoin market is totally different from bitcoin.Its highly volatile.Researching and finding the most under valued coin is the best way to make good profits.By this way,we can remain cool even if our invested coin's price falls down as we are aware of its potential.You could even try day trading in altcoin market.
