I followed quite a few before I started investing. The problem is they usually make promises to what they will do after their ICO. I try to find ones doing something prior to their ICO as this usually establishes credibility IMO.

Very true. Some like vector already have mobile applications which shows me that these ICO's are not just money grabbers, they actually developed something and put in the work before they started to raise money from the community
