I think you need to take time to learn how bitcoin works. Either by reading or experimenting with small amounts.
A full node - a piece of software used as a wallet and to broadcast "blocks" to the other users.
A hardware wallet stores your private keys, these should never touch your computer or the Internet unless you ask them to (and it's worth writing down the seed).

For a first user I'd recommend you not to go straight for a hardware wallet and instead go for either bitcoin core (brom bitcoin.org) or electrum (from electrum.org) to get started unless you either don't trust your computer or want to store high values of the coins in there.
