That's the basic rules in trading and investing, with bitcoin it's very possible because of the price movement.
When there is a dump that is the right time to buy and then sell when there is a pump, it could happen in both bitcoin and altcoins.

That is the most basic but one of the most effective strategy in making a good time to buy and sell bitcoin because when the market is moving down then that is the best time to buy. One of the effective strategy also is to buy regularly or do cost averaging because it will lower the price and balance the bought price enough to give you profits in the future.

I agree with you that is the most basic strategy but you also can have a trading strategy like we all know if bitcoin price goes down than the price of altcoins goes up and if bitcoin goes up than the price of altcoins go down this way you know when to buy and when to sell.
