It is closing in on the end of year tax codes, and the IRS, is just attempting to get a list of the bigger players, to have a feel or in other words to see if those bigger players are reporting on their capital gains. This is something everyone should prepare to do if Your investment rises above the tax code rates for you, normally file. I certainly know I will make sure my accountant sees to it that my crypto is included in my returns.
