One simple question though, why Skein? Why not start something decent (not only new algo, but some extra useful functionality) from scratch?

Why invent a bike? Dash (formerly known as Darkcoin and XCoin) Why did they do that?

But they were first to implement alternative to zero-proof knowledge so made it possible to have more anonymous transactions than on bitcoin.
