Depends, you can set your own price. The price I have set now, I make ~40%-60% more than prohashing. If nobody rents they have a system so it automatically mines other backup pools that you set. If you set your price right though, there will be the demand for it to almost always be rented.

Do you constantly update the rental price yourself or do you let the "market" determine the price? I used them previously but it seemed that I would my miners would get rented right before a spike in prices.

You can have them set the price automatically so it changes for you, or you can set it to a static number and change it as you feel the need. Even if you undercut the cheapest guy on there, you're still making far more than any pool could ever make you.
