I fiddled around with GPU mining rigs in 2013. It was a real pita, ongoing tuning, changing and tinkering, including smoking or exploding graphic cards, PSUs and mainboards.

As the ASICs came up I switched and, except for the early generations, its more or less plug and play and forget now. Plus smoke and explosions are much rarer Cheesy

Never had any problems with my 8 GPU rig.
Things have gotten a lot better now, give it another shot.

ps. I do not over-clock any of my cards, everything is stock
