Unfortunately due to the nature of this fire and the tremendous possibility of loss to the cities extremely brave firefighters, temperatures had to be allowed to drop before they went inside. By that time the gold had been exposed due to such temperature that it was, of course unfortunately, unrecoverable.

The gold was in fireproof safes. Even in the safes were broken it's not like gold just evaporates into thin air.
