I think what makes bitcoin so expensive, especially against all other cryptocurrencies is the fact that it is one of the longest running online currency in the internet. Not to mention it's popularity to people which is merely rising with the help of the social media advertisements. All these makes it in demand that's why it is expensive.

there is no such a thing like expensive or cheap. I mean we cannot label it so easily as it should be interpereted from the frame of supply and demand. there are different parameters to evaluate this. if we come back to your question about why btc price rose so much, the answer is the demand rise.
