You need an ethereum address that supports erc20 tokens. You cannot use the coinbase address because you do not hold the private key of that address. If a token is sent to that address, it will go to coinbase, not you. Most people here use myetherwallet address because it supports all erc20 tokens.

You can receive erc20 tokens on an empty wallet, but you will need funds in your wallet when you want to transfer your tokens from it.
