First, check top coinmarketcap any coin below your target. Then read whitepaper and discussions to choose the best one. Buy coins in top 20 is great ideas.
Second, you can search ICO projects to buy. There are many great projects here ( and also some are scam). But you gain more possibility to take large profits.
I suggest some great exchanges for holder is kucoin, binance,... Many great project on here.

I really agree about reading the whitepaper. Everyone know should what they're getting themselves into. Cannot stress this enough.
