If you have a profile on Steemit and you convert Steem to Steem power you get around 9% interest and you are able to upvote other posts and gain more steem power from that. If you have good original content you can also build a following and post content to earn Steem power and SBD from upvotes.

doyou have a source for the 9% interest? I have 10K steem sitting at bittrex. but would lock it in if the 9% thing was true

You do get interest on your Steem, but only if you convert it to Steem Power on Steemit. The rate declines every year and I think it is around 1.5% (annual) right now and not 9%. But of course since you are getting it credited after every few seconds, so if you have a big amount of Steem Power, it could gain a lot of compound interest!!
