There are exact clones of this project called cryptonote/cryptonight. few hundred. Do I need to list the 'coins', or can you research it?

I think one of them was genuine because it did add many changes. XMR? Could mine it with CPU when 1 coin was 1$...

uses the same daemon wallet, same UI. the websites look the same.

The pool is open source, so is everything else.

Just change the graphics and you have a 'how to make a coin'.

Few really good coins were launched with CPU only miner that came with the wallet. If you got lucky or knew a friend, you could mine hundreds of coins in 24 hours with a fast CPU.

14 blocks = 1400 coins with CPU in 1-2 hours. Now you need 5000$ worth of GPUs to mine around 100 coins/month.

That what open source is. Monero too is a bytecoin.
It all depends on how and where the community and the development team leads things to.
Easier option to clone is scrypt, cryptonight require comparatively larger effort.
