If now I would be on your position, maybe I would talk differently than now. Merit system is much more beneficial for old members. But I consider it as analogy of early Bitcoin investors/hodlers. These who invested 3-4 years ago when Bitcoin was worth few hundreds bucks, have much bigger profits than these who invested few months ago. Same with Bitcointalk - these who joined few years ago now reached high ranks.
But you shouldn't forget that many people came here not to earn money. They just discuss, follow news, educate themselves or helping to newbies. For these people Merit system and Ranks aren't that important, I think.

Just want to share my feelings about merit system here, just a few days before I am supposed to rank up as Member is the time the merit system was introduced. I feel really disappointed because my rank will be screwed as Jr Member until some members will merit me. It seems so impossible to get a meit from high ranked members because they are not obliged to do it. But I will not say I am against with it because I totally understand why they are doing this. But I hope it not be unfair to the new comers who are religiously posting constructive, informative, and no fouls words in the forum.
