Mining stops as soon a Russia, China, North Korea and the US set off all their nuclear bombs on the same day. Then, all the miners are completely fucked and they will stop altogether.

Essentially, with difficulty resetting to a lower amount of miners stop it will then become more beneficial to mine again. Even if Bitcoin some how dies the cryptocurrency genie is out of the bottle, there will always be sold coin that's profitable to mine for someone.
