I have been thinking about using PCI cages to mount the boards instead of PC cases.  I could also use rack mounted cases.

These support 6 boards each and should be pretty easy to mount in a mining configuration.  Any comments?

It looks to me like that wouldn't leave anywhere near enough space for the coolers from the looks of it. Maybe you'd fit ~3 in there if you're lucky, not sure as I don't know the final height. Had you considered that?

I think even with the (much more expensive) GPU coolers you still wouldn't be able to put one in each slot...

I am currently thinking a large block of wood and saw, and just cut a bunch of slots in it. Not too pretty but should work OK I think *shrugs*
