Capitalism self-regulates just fine in some cases, like it will determine the number of barbershops in a town. But there are other cases: bank runs, monopolies, etc.

Bank runs are only a problem because banks lend out 50 times more than they have.

It's just an example of an unstable system. There are plenty of such examples, aside from banks. Sometimes a small problem for a company might create a self-fulfilling prophecy, and lead to bigger and bigger problems.

It has nothing to do with capitalism. What banks do is fraud, and anyone else would go to jail over it.
