It is not easy as you think. For that you should work hard. We have ranking system here based upon your quality post as well as merit. Like

Jr. Member you need to have 30 activities

Now your are newbie here. To become a Junior member you should have 30 activities, If you have 30 activity, it will automatically upgrade as junior member, And the important thing is all your post should be in good quality, if you post are not good it will remove by a moderator. And also it will not consider as an activity, which is not a valid post.

You are right.But with that new Merit system lot of Junior members are stuck in that rank.if you want to go higher than junior member definitely need merits.
