masternode is when you need to have certain amount of token to be lock up and you get certain percentage of it. In other words, think masternode as a mining. If you mine then you get small portion of rewards for being a miner. Numerous of coins have masternode, Dash, Pivx

If you still don't understand it, think masternode as passive income
