It's funny how many bitcoins were lost due to carelessness, back in the days when no one really thought bitcoin would amount to any serious value.

Yup, thus keeping the Bitcoin market healthy, a monopoly can destroy Bitcoin itself if its owned only by a few people and the high value will be lost because of losing its functionality so that only the speculative values remain even if there is a made up transaction.
