AndrewP: it's easy to omit what seems obvious in a tutorial, besides I leaned a lot about the rest of the mechanics of Gridcoin while trying to figure out my specific problem.

You have to have cpumining=true in your gridcoin.conf at all times in order to get anything for CPU mining. There is no solo/pool mining for CPU (which is what I assume you're doing since you followed AndrewP's tutorial). Solo and pool mining is only if you're mining using cgminer or another "mining" software - otherwise known as mining with your GPU. So go ahead and add cpumining=true again and restart your client
