The Pope is an earthly king who wants to improve his earthly kingdom. He might say just about anything if it helps his kingdom to grow. What he says doesn't necessarily have anything to do with reality. You can tell this by looking at the history of the papacy, and seeing how wrong and "fickle" the various popes were over the last thousand years.
