Yeah that airdrop method of DeepOnion was surprisingly effective but they have to think also of other ways to attract supporters / people into the project. By the way, Bitsend also did that kind of airdrop before DeepOnion did which is also an effective one.

Also, semux made a similar one to DeepOnion but semux also has a good promising blockchain so i can't really say it counts.

Too bad none of those has solid product to show yet, i hope they are still in development and will provide us with a solid product. But when it comes to promotion, there is nothing better then an airdrop.

Right, for promotion it is very good, but the root of this question was a distribution method for the coins and therefore its not the best choice.
