Competing with Bitcoin is indeed a waste of time, but that's not how they see it. For them Bitcoin is similar to a tech company that can be overtaken by something that does everything better and cheaper.

Reality however will show them that they are wrong. Currently we have so many coins that are faster and cheaper than Bitcoin in terms of confirmations, but yet no one seems to care about it.

Nano is a great example. It's superior to any of the currently existing coins in terms of speed and cost, but it can't gain momentum at all. If this was a tech company type of industry, Nano would take over, but not in crypto.
