The community asked for this update to be done and we implemented it as fast as possible. This will prevent multiminers from leaving the network with a high diff after they mine Karmacoin, making it more fair for everyone. The actual algorithm will change at block 10,500 which we estimate to happen around or a little after Feb 10th. That is why the upgrades must be completed by Feb 10th for it to be successful.

Note: If you happen to download this update after 12:30AM EST 2/10, you will also get a wallet that contains a fix which allows sending transactions of > 84M coins.

I receive the following error when trying to update:

Does the previous wallet need to be uninstalled before installing this? If so, do I simply replace the newly created wallet.dat file with my old one?

Just purge it. I ran into this error too

Back up your wallet beforehand. I actually didn't have to back up my wallet.
