DYOR is the key. My rule of thumb is don't expect a 100x gain in major altcoins in the short term. Try to find a good altcoin which is relatively new and check out its graph. Check out the supply and try to predict it is future market cap in 1-2 years. Try to invest it at the most bottom point you can find.

I agree that is a good strategy in investing your money. Doing some research first is a good start because you will have an overview of the market and you will see the possible altcoin investment that you can try and you should also look at the chart and do some basic technical analysis to make sure that you will be buying at the support and not on near resistance's price.
