I have updated the main table and chart on the first page of this thread.
According to Merit Stats, currently there are 98 active merits sources, but the detection algorithm has already spotted 111 merit sources (6 of them are the former merit sources for sure).
I also published monthly statistics for December 2019. LoyceV is the leader of this TOP-200 in the previous month.
I like your explanation. theymos merely reserved his sMerits for months and recently spent a lot of merits to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Bitcointalk.

My suspicion is that there is almost no way (unless I am understanding the situation incorrectly) that theymos merely had all those smerits in his reserve bank. Of course, he had likely not been spending his smerits on a regular 30 day basis, so those smerits would have frequently been expunged by the system's algorithm.
