I can usually be even more skeptical than average in regular circumstances... But I don't think that's enough of a reason to disrespect a fellow member even if it's because of "just in case". Think about it.

Not saying tourist don't have any, he's nice fella but sometimes cynicism takes a driving seat....
You can have empathy and still question what the cause was. We did not exactly get a dispositive explanation regarding the cause, merely a conclusory assertion.
Ofcourse, questions should be asked and i don't see anything wrong with your argument.
But in such situation if our first few words are "I don't believe you" then we should be ready to hear magic words "Fuck you" instead of explanation.
Of course there should be a way to frame the issue that is more empathetic, and maybe just ask some additional questions about how they found out and how the cause was determined.
I surely am NOT sympathetic to the way that cryptotourist and BAC went on the attack, yet sometimes it is NOT easy to frame matters with reasonable empathy.
