Maybe because you are new to the dapp space this is considered minuscule during the dapp hype.. people were in steroids to "mine" these shit tokens.. it was a quick way to make big profits..

People would abuse the faucet to mine the token for free.

Faucet are not only to abuse but to try the service for free before actually deposit on the site. The faucet abuse can be controlled by limited the number of free coins per customer. I will suggest that all the new casino should have a faucet facility on their site.
