Last time they started getting inside the house, but luckily they haven't reached that stage yet. I've tried those store bought ant poison pellets, and it seemed to have no impact. I do not know where you are located but here in our country we easily find an insecticide powder and every household usually has that here, just sprinkle that in the corners and all ants will be gone.
Secondly, keep your home clean and dry and make sure no food or sugary stuff is found in your home open even in dust bin and you will see reduction in ants.

You're right ants are more common in places.
This is why we'd like to stay our surroundings dry and therefore the most beneficial of the pesticide powder is using soapy water or spray. this may reduce the infestation of ants tons the spray is most beneficial.
