Well, you don't have to do that. There is plenty of detective service to check in a local location for people from abroad. But many projects don't have a headquarter location or they could list something vague and not in detail. I think there are many ways to identify the legitimacy of a project, team information also one of that.

usually if they are real people they don't mind listing all their accounts name in internet for people to check like LinkedIn or that sort of thing, they might even speak up in public but fake project usually uses fake identity and therefore rarely comes up to public because they are not that person they showed on their project in the first place.
